11 Glenville Football Players Reportedly Charged After Alleged Store Theft

CLEVELAND — Cleveland 19 reported Sept. 1 that 11 members of the #63 ranked Glenville High School football team have been charged with theft in connection with an alleged Aug. 27 incident at a Dick’s Sporting Goods in Grove City, Ohio.

The station, citing a police report, said nine of the accused players are juveniles and two are 18-year-old team members.

Grove City police were called at 7:26 p.m. to the store at 1656 Stringtown Road after employees reported that a large group believed to include Glenville players had taken merchandise. Police placed the reported value at $4,552.04, including clothing and football equipment. Initial police information estimated that 15 to 20 people may have been involved, while the Sept. 1 report identified 11 players as charged.

According to Cleveland 19’s account of the police report, Glenville head coach Ted Ginn Sr. later turned over two bags of clothing and a pair of football cleats. Athletic director Paul Lewis held a players-only meeting, and Lewis and Ginn agreed to help police identify people shown in store surveillance video by using the team roster. News 5 Cleveland separately reported that the coaches cooperated with investigators and that some merchandise was returned.

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District said it was aware of the allegations, was gathering information and would take appropriate next steps if its expectations for student conduct were not met. OHSFB Media reported that a Glenville spokesperson declined further comment while the law-enforcement investigation involving minors remains active. OHSAA has not announced case-specific action; its rules leave decisions about participation following off-field personal conduct to the school.
