Vero Beach came within one point of an undefeated season and its first state championship. Lake Mary’s 28-27 win in the 2025 Class 7A final ended a 14-1 season and Vero Beach’s first trip to a state championship game since 1981. To make matters worse, they were up 21-3 at halftime, and 27-19 with the ball, under 2 minutes to play. After taking a safety to pin Lake Mary deep, Lake Mary won on a Hail Mary with 0:08 left to win.
Looking to avenge last year, the Fighting Indians enter 2026 with Notre Dame commit Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV taking over the offense. The roster also includes 11 other current players with verified Division I opportunities, but the number alone does not replace the production that graduated after a 15-game run.
Team Snapshot
Head coach: Lenny Jankowski
2025 record: 14-1
2025 finish: FHSAA Class 7A state runner-up
2026 classification: FHSAA Class 6A, Region 2, District 8
2026 T25PS ranking: #97
First game: Aug. 21 vs. Jensen Beach
Monds Takes Control of the Offense
Monds completed 45 of 63 passes for 691 yards and seven touchdowns in limited work last season. His largest assignment came in the state final, when he threw for 189 yards and two scores. The 2026 opener will be his first as Vero Beach’s full-time quarterback, but he has already handled championship-game pressure.
The receiving group gives him experienced targets. Junior Latravious Woods caught 59 passes for 637 yards and 13 touchdowns, while senior Marcus Melbourne Jr. caught 26 for 511 yards and four scores. The rushing work left by Efrem White and Jonathan Hillsman must be redistributed, with Antoine White among the returning options.

The offensive front is the less settled part of the equation. Vero Beach scored 628 points last season, but much of the supporting structure around White graduated. Monds and the returning receivers give the offense a high ceiling; the new line and backfield rotation will determine how quickly it reaches it.
A Talented Defense With New Responsibilities
Vero Beach lost its top four players in tackles for loss, creating real work in the front seven. Ryan Hendrickson returns after 47 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 11 quarterback hurries, and the current roster adds or expands roles for several Division I recruits.
UCF commit Dontallis Render brings length on the edge. Junior Josiah Taylor supplies size inside, while Deion Jackson arrives after playing at Legacy. In the secondary, Jamarion Hillsman and Micah Roberts return after productive sophomore seasons. The talent level remains high; the open question is whether the group can become as assignment-sound as the veteran defense that reached the final.
Current Division I Recruits
Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV, QB, Sr. (2027): Monds committed to Notre Dame on May 1 after reclassifying to 2027. His 71.4-percent completion rate came in a reserve role that included meaningful postseason work.
Deion Jackson, DB/ATH, Sr. (2027): Jackson transferred to Vero Beach after the 2025 season and holds a broad Division I offer list that most recently added Florida.
Dontallis Render II, EDGE/TE, Sr. (2027): Render committed to UCF in June. Boston College, Syracuse, UConn and USF were among the other programs in his recruitment.
Josiah Taylor, DL/OL, Jr. (2028): Taylor’s current offer list includes Syracuse, Baylor, Boston College, UConn, FAU, UNLV and Georgia Tech.
Jamarion Hillsman, DB/WR, Jr. (2028): Hillsman holds offers from Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech, USF and Florida A&M, among others, after averaging 4.6 tackles per game as a sophomore.
Marcus Melbourne Jr., WR/DB, Sr. (2027): Melbourne holds a Bethune-Cookman offer and returns as Vero Beach’s most explosive proven receiver at 19.7 yards per catch.
Jake Tell, EDGE/TE, Sr. (2027): Tell holds Division I offers from Bethune-Cookman and Georgia State and gives the front another multi-position option.
Antoine White, RB/ATH, Sr. (2027): White holds a Bethune-Cookman offer and is part of the group replacing the graduated rushing production.
Sergio Hogue Jr., ATH, Sr. (2027): The 6-foot-3 athlete holds an offer from Division I FCS program West Georgia.
Tristan Davis, DE, Sr. (2027): Davis holds an FBS offer from Eastern Michigan and adds another experienced edge option.
Kaden Huggins, EDGE/LB, Jr. (2028): Huggins holds offers from Syracuse, Maryland and Bethune-Cookman.
Micah Roberts, DB/WR, Jr. (2028): Roberts holds offers from FAU and UNLV after intercepting three passes as a sophomore.
Schedule Breakdown
Jensen Beach and Atlantic start it off at at home before St. Frances Academy (MD) visits on Sept. 4. That game is the national measuring point and the earliest test of whether Vero Beach’s rebuilt line play can support its recruiting profile.
District games against Centennial, Fort Pierce Central and Treasure Coast are split around home dates with Spanish River, Mainland and Pahokee. The regular season ends with road games at Treasure Coast and Eau Gallie. Seven of the 10 regular-season games are at home, giving the new starters a favorable setting for most of the schedule.

Biggest Question
How quickly can Vero Beach turn a deep recruiting roster into dependable production at the positions hit hardest by graduation?
Monds has already played on the state-final stage, and Woods and Melbourne give him proven receivers. The defense has Division I talent at every level. The uncertainty is concentrated in the offensive line, the rushing rotation and a front seven replacing its most disruptive 2025 players.
Bottom Line
Vero Beach is talented enough to contend in the FHSAA’s highest classification, but the 12-player Division I list should not be confused with a finished team. The St. Frances game will reveal the line-of-scrimmage floor early. If the new front holds and Monds turns his limited 2025 work into full-season command, the Fighting Indians can make another December run.

I have Vero Beach finishing the regular season 9-1. St. Frances Academy is the most difficult game on the schedule, but the Fighting Indians should be favored in most of the other nine. The combination of Monds, an experienced receiving group and multiple Division I defenders gives Vero Beach a legitimate chance to return to the state finals, but I have them falling there again.
