Greenback has the most direct form of improvement available to a Class 1A team: almost everyone is back. The Cherokees return nine offensive starters and all 11 defensive starters from a 4-6 team that finished one place outside the playoffs.
Team Snapshot
Location: Greenback, Tennessee
Classification: Class 1A, Region 2
Head Coach: Richie Wilhite
2025 Record: 4-6
2025 Finish: Fifth in Region 2-1A; missed the playoffs
Returning Starters: Nine on offense, 11 on defense
Greenback's four wins were not enough to reach the postseason, but the roster did not need to be rebuilt. It needed time. With 20 starters back, the Cherokees should enter 2026 with clearer roles, more physical maturity and a better understanding of how narrow the margin is in region games.
2026 Outlook
Senior running back and linebacker Elliott Lindsey is the established identity. He rushed for 1,242 yards and 15 touchdowns while averaging 10.3 tackles per game. That production gives Greenback a reliable way to control possessions and a proven defender in the middle.
The next task is creating more help around him. Sophomore quarterback and athlete Lucas Clifford passed for 290 yards and ran for 297 yards with three rushing touchdowns last season. His development can make the offense less predictable, especially with receivers and defensive backs Carson Loope, Cooper Holt and Griffin Cope returning.

The line brings back senior Cooper Barrow and junior Lucas Bryant, while Cade Breedlove adds another senior two-way option at outside linebacker and running back. Greenback's coaches also identified Cale Stinnett, Moses Bowling and Lincoln Swann as returners who matter to the depth of a roster expected to play beyond 10 games.
Region 2 remains the test. Midway, Oliver Springs and Coalfield were three of the games that kept Greenback below the playoff line last season. Twenty returning starters raise the floor, but the Cherokees still have to turn familiarity into better execution in those matchups.
Players to Know
Elliott Lindsey, RB/LB, Senior
Lindsey rushed for 1,242 yards and 15 touchdowns while averaging 10.3 tackles per game. He is Greenback's most proven offensive player and one of its most productive defenders.
Lucas Bryant, OL/DL, Junior
Bryant returns in the line after recording two sacks last season. His growth is important to both the run game built around Lindsey and a defense returning every starter.
Lucas Clifford, QB/ATH, Sophomore
Clifford produced 290 passing yards and 297 rushing yards in 2025. Greenback does not need him to carry the offense immediately, but a more consistent dual-threat presence would make the entire unit harder to defend.
Cooper Barrow, OL/DL, Senior
Barrow gives Greenback senior experience up front. His two-way role matters for a small-school roster that wants to play physical football without wearing down.
Carson Loope, WR/DB, Junior
Loope recorded 219 return yards last season and brings field-position value in addition to his work at receiver and defensive back.
Cooper Holt, WR/DB, Senior
Holt is a senior two-way perimeter player on a roster bringing back all 11 defensive starters. His experience supports both the passing game and the secondary.
Griffin Cope, RB/DB, Junior
Cope contributed as a receiver and scored a touchdown last season. His versatility gives Greenback another option around Lindsey and Clifford.
Cale Stinnett
Stinnett is part of the coach-identified returning group. His development adds to the depth Greenback expects to gain from keeping 20 starters together.
Moses Bowling
Bowling was specifically named by the coaching staff among the key returners. His role is part of a larger advantage built on continuity rather than a small group of recruits.
Cade Breedlove, OLB/RB, Senior
Breedlove gives the Cherokees another senior who can contribute at linebacker and running back. That flexibility helps manage Lindsey's two-way workload.
Lincoln Swann
Swann completes the coaching staff's 11-player returning list. He adds another familiar contributor to a team that should be deeper and more settled than it was last fall.
Coach-Identified Newcomers
The staff listed Kayne Roberts and J.P. Moran as newcomers to watch. Their emergence would give Greenback more options behind a veteran starting group.

Biggest Question
Will 20 returning starters be enough to reverse Greenback's results in region play?
Continuity should make the Cherokees better, but the playoff math is simple. Greenback must move ahead of at least one team after finishing fifth last season, and the head-to-head opportunities against Midway, Oliver Springs and Coalfield will decide whether the experience produces a postseason return.

I have Greenback finishing 7-3 and returning to the Class 1A playoffs and winning a game there too. Twenty returning starters should produce a better floor, and Lindsey gives the Cherokees a dependable offensive identity. The schedule still includes difficult region games against Midway, Oliver Springs and Coalfield, but Greenback has enough experience to move from fifth place into the top four.
