2026 Teams to Know Season Preview: McKeesport (PA)
McKeesport enters the Tom Smith era with 14 returning starters, Georgia commit Kemon Spell and the experience of three straight WPIAL championship appearances.

McKeesport has reached the WPIAL championship game three years in a row. The Tigers finished 9-4 in 2025 and left Acrisure Stadium with a 21-12 loss to Aliquippa, another reminder that this program is already good enough to reach the last game and still hungry for the last step.
The next attempt begins with a coaching change. Tom Smith was appointed head coach in June after Matt Miller's departure, and he inherits seven returning starters on each side of the ball. He also inherits Georgia commit Kemon Spell, one of the most productive and nationally recognized running backs in the country.

Kemon Spell Forces Every Defense to Begin in the Same Place
Spell missed five games last season and still ran for 1,755 yards with 28 rushing touchdowns. He added four more scores through returns and receiving, then contributed two interceptions on defense. Those numbers explain why every McKeesport opponent begins its plan by trying to limit No. 1 before thinking about anything else.
That attention can become an advantage if the rest of the offense stays efficient. Jordan Stuvaints is the young quarterback responsible for making the correct decision when a safety inserts into the run fit or a corner is left alone outside. Javien Robinson gives him a South Carolina-committed receiver who caught 18 passes for 370 yards in a run-first offense last year. McKeesport does not need to throw 35 times. It needs the passing game to punish the exact coverage created by fear of Spell.

Makai Daniels and Nicholas Beerman add more options in the backfield and at linebacker. Their presence matters over a full season because Spell's workload has to be managed without letting the offense lose its identity. Balance here does not mean taking the ball away from the best player. It means making every touch harder for a defense to predict.
The Line and the Coaching Transition Will Decide the Ceiling
Justin Powell and Alexander Winowitch give McKeesport two returning bodies around whom the line can develop. Powell is a 6-foot-1, 261-pound 2028 two-way lineman, while Winowitch enters his senior season at roughly 6-foot-2 and 223 pounds. They have to create the clean first level that lets Spell reach his speed and gives Stuvaints manageable downs.
Smith is not taking over a program that needs a new standard. McKeesport already expects to play for the WPIAL title. His job is to keep the toughness and option-run identity that brought the Tigers this far while adding enough answers to finish the final game. Fourteen returning starters should make that transition much easier than it would be with a young roster.
Players to Know
Kemon Spell, RB/DB
Spell is committed to Georgia and enters 2026 as the player every opponent will build its plan around. His 1,755 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns came despite missing five games, and his four additional all-purpose scores showed that McKeesport can change a game whenever it finds a way to put the ball in his hands.
Javien Robinson, WR/DB
Robinson committed to South Carolina in May. At roughly 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, he gives McKeesport a legitimate outside answer and a player capable of turning limited opportunities into production. His 370 receiving yards in 2025 came in an offense built around the run, which makes his efficiency more important than his target total.
Jordan Stuvaints, QB/DB
Stuvaints is a 2028 athlete stepping into the most important decision-making role in the offense. The defense will give him chances because of the attention devoted to Spell. If he protects the ball and consistently finds Robinson or the open option, McKeesport becomes much harder to reduce to one answer.
Makai Daniels
Daniels is part of the returning core Smith can use around Spell. His opportunity is to provide dependable touches and keep the offense physical when the featured back needs a break or when the formation asks another player to carry the responsibility.
Nicholas Beerman, RB/LB
Beerman adds two-way depth to a roster that wants to stay fresh through another long postseason. He can help the backfield and the second level of the defense, two areas where reliable rotation snaps matter more as the schedule reaches October.
Justin Powell, OL/DL
Powell gives the Tigers a young, powerful interior piece on both sides of the ball. His development will affect more than the rushing lanes. McKeesport needs the front to keep Stuvaints out of obvious passing situations and to prevent opponents from controlling the middle against the defense.
Alexander Winowitch, OL/DL
Winowitch brings senior experience to the two-way line rotation. On a team with championship expectations and a new head coach, an older lineman who understands the weekly physical demand can stabilize the group around the younger starters.

Biggest Question
Can McKeesport build enough dependable offense around Spell to win the final game of the WPIAL bracket?
Every opponent will overload the run and challenge Stuvaints to make a clean decision. Robinson has to win the isolated matchup, the line has to avoid the negative play and the complementary backs have to keep the offense from changing completely when Spell is not carrying it.
McKeesport has already proved it can survive the bracket. The difference between another championship appearance and a championship will be whether the Tigers can answer the one adjustment designed to take away their first choice.
Bottom Line
McKeesport has the roster of a WPIAL title favorite: 14 returning starters, a Georgia commit capable of taking over any game, a South Carolina commit outside and three consecutive trips to the championship stage.
The coaching change adds a new variable, but Smith is taking over a veteran team that already understands the standard. I expect the Tigers to be playing deep into November again. This season will be judged by whether they finally leave the final with the last win.
