Kentucky Playoff Preview: Douglass Leans on Its Strengths, Boyle Looks to Finish

Frederick Douglass has spent the fall winning with its running game and defense. Last week, it needed both. The Broncos beat Boyle County 15-14 to finish 10-0 despite completing just four passes.
Boyle left that game with a different frustration. The defending Class 4A champion nearly doubled Douglass in total yards, but four failed fourth downs and a scoreless second half left the Rebels a point short.
Now both district champions open the playoffs Thursday, November 5. Douglass hosts Henry Clay at 7 p.m. Eastern. Boyle hosts Whitley County at 7:30 p.m. Eastern. Both opponents are winless. Both games are rematches of last year's first round.

Douglass doesn't need to look far for what has worked. The Broncos average 6.2 yards per carry and have allowed just 98 points in 10 games. Opponents average 2.5 yards a rush, according to WL Stats. That's a strong foundation for November.
Running back Dakari Talbert did the heavy lifting against Boyle. He carried 24 times, scored on the ground and caught an 18-yard touchdown pass. His two-touchdown night kept Douglass scoring even when the passing game offered little else.
Henry Clay's defense has to deal with him after allowing Conner to rush for 396 yards in a 54-29 loss. The Blue Devils have found more offense lately, scoring 28 against Tates Creek and 29 against Conner after consecutive shutouts. Getting stops remains the problem.
