How the 2026 Public Schools Top 100 Was Determined
The 2026 Public Schools Top 100 is not a ranking of what happened last season.
It is a projection of what we believe will happen this season.
The 2025 results provide important context, but they do not determine the order. High school football rosters change quickly. Quarterbacks graduate, offensive lines turn over, transfers arrive, underclassmen develop, coaches change and teams face different schedules and playoff paths.
The goal is to rank the teams that will take the field in 2026—not reward the versions of those programs that played in 2025.
The rankings are based primarily on:
* Returning production
* Quarterback and offensive-line continuity
* Verified transfers and departures
* Underclassmen expected to take on larger roles
* Coaching and system stability
* Schedule strength
* Classification and playoff difficulty
* Overall roster depth and ceiling
Returning starters matter, but the raw number does not tell the full story. Returning a quarterback, multiple offensive linemen and the core of a defense carries more weight than simply bringing back the same number of starters at less impactful positions.
Transfers are considered only when they can be reasonably verified. Rumors and unofficial roster listings are not enough to significantly change a team’s placement. Incoming additions are also weighed against graduation losses and outgoing transfers.
Schedule and classification matter as well. A team projected to finish 9-2 against elite competition may still be considered stronger than a team expected to go undefeated against a lighter schedule. These rankings are meant to measure team quality—not simply predict the best records.
That is why a defending champion may be ranked lower after major graduation losses, while a team that fell short last season may enter 2026 much higher because it returns a loaded roster.
The final rankings represent our best projection of the strongest public high school football teams entering the 2026 season.
They are not a reward for 2025.
They are a forecast for what comes next.
