North Dakota high school football is one of the most unique landscapes in the country — not because of complexity, but because of how small, condensed, and uneven the structure is across classifications.
The sport is governed by the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA), and the numbers immediately stand out:
AAA / 11AA (top class): 12 teams
AA / 11A: 12 teams
A / 11B: 33 teams (largest classification)
9-man football is widely played across rural areas
6-man exists, but is extremely sparse statewide
There was also a shift before the 2023 season, when the NDHSAA moved from AAA / AA / A → 11AA / 11A / 11B — but the competitive hierarchy stayed exactly the same.
How to Evaluate North Dakota

But with equal championship totals, the edge goes to Sheyenne for doing it at the highest level.

The most dominant program overall — just edged out by classification weight.

Why they’re here
Fargo Davies built the strongest late-window résumé in the state:
