Mandarin was one score from another Class 6A state semifinal, losing 27-20 at Buchholz after an 11-2 fall season.
The 2026 team keeps the quarterback, leading rusher, leading receiver and three of its most productive front-seven defenders. It also moves into a new classification. The FHSAA placed Mandarin in Class 5A, Region 1, District 2 with Bartram Trail, Beachside, Fletcher, Nease and Ponte Vedra.
Team Snapshot
2025 record: 11-2
2025 finish: FHSAA Class 6A regional finalist
2025 district finish: District champion at 3-0
2026 classification: FHSAA Class 5A, Region 1, District 2
Head coach: Toby Bullock
2026 Outlook
The offense returns production at every skill position. Junior quarterback Knox Annis completed 112 of 186 passes for 2,203 yards, 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season. He added 330 rushing yards and committed to Miami in April as the Hurricanes' first pledge in the 2028 class.
Annis still has his most dangerous target. Junior Brysen Wright caught 46 passes for 983 yards and 10 touchdowns, intercepted five passes and scored 15 total touchdowns. He is uncommitted, but his current offer list includes Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M.
Senior Shaunqueze Foster prevents the offense from becoming one-dimensional. He rushed for 1,217 yards and 17 touchdowns at 7.2 yards per carry. Foster also has reported Division I offers from Jacksonville State and Miami (Ohio). The combination of Annis, Wright and Foster gives Mandarin a returning passer, a vertical matchup and a proven closer in the run game.

The offensive line is the variable. Seniors Wesley Hudgens and Ray Parzik are on the current roster, and junior Jayden Lightsey has added a Division I offer from Florida Atlantic. Mandarin does not need to invent a new offensive identity, but it does need enough protection and movement up front to let its three established playmakers work on schedule.
The defensive front has college talent across multiple classes. Senior Kindrid Outland led the team with 5.5 sacks and is committed to South Florida. Junior Christian McGowan recorded 19 tackles, 1.5 sacks and five quarterback hurries as a sophomore, then expanded his recruitment to 11 Division I offers, including Georgia, South Carolina, Colorado and Syracuse.
Senior linebacker Cory Matthews is the stabilizer behind that front. He made 93 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and two sacks, and his current Division I offer list includes Florida State, Florida Atlantic, FIU, West Virginia and Duke. Mandarin graduated several leading defenders, but Matthews and Outland give the replacement group experienced voices at the two most important levels of the defense.
Players to Know
Knox Annis | QB | Junior
Annis is a two-year starter and a Miami commit. His completion rate jumped above 60 percent in 2025, and he accounted for 2,533 yards between passing and rushing. Mandarin's ceiling starts with his ability to limit negative plays while continuing to attack downfield.
Brysen Wright | WR/DB | Junior
Wright changes games in all three phases. He produced 983 receiving yards and 10 touchdown catches, five interceptions on defense and two punt-return touchdowns. His size and ball skills give Annis a target who can win even when the defense knows where the throw is going.
Shaunqueze Foster | RB | Senior
Foster rushed for 1,217 yards and 17 touchdowns while sharing work in the backfield. He was especially important late in the year, including 86 yards and two touchdowns in the regional-final loss to Buchholz. His reported Division I offers are Jacksonville State and Miami (Ohio).
Kindrid Outland | DL | Senior
Outland is a South Florida commit and the returning team leader in sacks. He combines interior size with enough quickness to affect the pocket, and his six quarterback hurries were second on the team. He is the first player opposing protection plans must identify.
Cory Matthews | LB | Senior
Matthews returns after 93 tackles and 12.5 tackles for loss. He can clean up runs behind the defensive line or attack the backfield himself, and he has current offers from Florida State, Florida Atlantic, FIU, West Virginia and Duke.
Christian McGowan | DL | Junior
McGowan's production and recruitment are both rising. He had 19 tackles, 1.5 sacks and five quarterback hurries as a sophomore. His 11 Division I offers now include Georgia, South Carolina, Colorado, Syracuse, Georgia Southern, Toledo, Miami (Ohio), Liberty and South Florida.
Jayden Lightsey | OL | Junior
Lightsey is listed on the current roster at tackle and guard and has received a Division I offer from Florida Atlantic. His development matters because Mandarin's skill talent is already proven. The line must give Annis a clean platform and keep Foster from having to create every yard after contact.
Schedule Breakdown
Mandarin hosts Creekside in an Aug. 14 kickoff classic, but the first four regular-season games are all on the road. The Mustangs open at McArthur in the Broward County Classic, then visit Atlantic Coast, Nease and Raines around a Sept. 4 open date.
The first home game does not arrive until Sept. 25 against Fletcher. Lake Mary visits the following week before Mandarin returns to the road for district games at Ponte Vedra and Beachside. The regular season ends with home games against Bartram Trail and St. Augustine.
Six of the 10 regular-season games are away from home. The new District 2-5A race also leaves little margin: Nease, Fletcher, Ponte Vedra, Beachside and Bartram Trail all appear on the schedule, so Mandarin will settle its postseason path directly.

Biggest Question
Can the line and rebuilt secondary match the proven star power at quarterback, running back, receiver and defensive front?
Mandarin does not have a balance problem in the backfield. Annis, Wright and Foster already produced at a high level together. The risk is whether the supporting structure can protect them through four straight road games and replace the graduated playmakers behind Matthews, Outland and McGowan.

I have Mandarin finishing 9-1 in the regular season.
The road-heavy start and Lake Mary game create real loss points, but Mandarin returns too much production at quarterback, running back, receiver and in the front seven to expect a major step backward. However, I don't see them taking a major step forward this year either.
Bottom Line
Mandarin comes in with Annis, Wright, Foster, Outland, Matthews and McGowan still on the roster. That is a stronger foundation than most teams can carry across an offseason. The Mustangs' season will turn on the line, the new secondary and whether they can handle six road games without wasting the advantage their returning stars provide.
