Cocoa enters the Nate Hooks era with proven skill talent and major defensive production to replace.

Cocoa enters the 2026 season at No. 54 in the T25PS Public Schools Top 100 after an 8-5 finish and another trip to the FHSAA Class 2A state semifinals. The Tigers did not extend their three-year state championship run, but they still won three playoff games before falling to eventual champion Cardinal Mooney.
The program now turns to Nate Hooks, a Cocoa graduate who was part of the staff for the 2022 and 2024 state championship teams. Hooks takes over a team with proven production at running back, wide receiver and linebacker, but the Tigers must replace several of the defenders who drove last season's postseason run.

2026 Outlook
Hooks is a new head coach, but he is not new to Cocoa football. He coached the Tigers' quarterbacks during the 2022 and 2024 championship seasons and remained on staff for the 2025 semifinal run. He also brings previous head-coaching experience after going 48-36 over eight seasons at Holy Trinity and leading Melbourne Central Catholic to a 9-3 record and district title in 2023.
The offense has two established skill-position producers back. Senior wide receiver Tank White averaged 41.0 receiving yards per game last season, while junior running back Javeon Scott led Cocoa at 54.6 rushing yards per game and scored seven times on the ground. White gives the passing game a proven outside target, and Scott gives the Tigers a runner who has already handled meaningful varsity work.

Quarterback play will determine how high the offense can climb. Cocoa produced 18 touchdown passes in 2025, but the unit was held to 14 points or fewer in four regular-season losses and was shut out in the state semifinal. The Tigers do not need to abandon their aggressive schedule or style, but they need more week-to-week efficiency against the best defenses on the slate.
The defense has a clear returning centerpiece in senior linebacker Kyree Brooks, who averaged 11.3 tackles per game and added three sacks and two forced fumbles last season. Junior defensive end Elyias Wilson also returns after recording 29 quarterback hurries.
The larger issue is replacing the production around them. Jermaine Waters accounted for 13 sacks and 54 quarterback hurries, O'Kece Battle forced six fumbles and recovered four, and Duran Guilford led the team with three interceptions. All three were seniors. Cocoa has talent in the next group, but the front and secondary must turn that talent into production quickly.
Players to Know
Tank White, Sr., WR — The Syracuse commit was Cocoa's leading receiver by yards per game in 2025 at 41.0. He is the most established returning target and the player most capable of stretching coverage outside.
Elyias Wilson, Jr., DE — Wilson recorded 29 quarterback hurries as a sophomore and enters 2026 with Division I offers from Iowa State, Jacksonville State, Rhode Island and East Tennessee State. His pressure rate will be important after Cocoa graduated its leading pass rusher.
Gregory Graham, Jr., DE/OLB — Graham has an East Tennessee State offer and flashed during the 2025 postseason, including two sacks against Newberry. His role should expand on a front replacing most of its top sack production.
Schedule Breakdown
Cocoa opens against Merritt Island after needing two overtimes to win the 2025 meeting, 30-24. The next three games bring Fort Pierce Central, a road rematch with Newberry and a trip to Eau Gallie. Cocoa beat Newberry in the opening round of last year's playoffs, while Eau Gallie handed the Tigers a 25-13 loss during the regular season.
The First Academy is the district game currently listed on the schedule. The second half also includes Centennial, Space Coast, Raines and Rockledge. Raines adds another difficult late-season test, and the Rockledge rivalry closes the regular season for the second straight year.
The schedule provides few empty weeks. Cocoa faces four 2025 rematches in the first five games, and three of those opponents either beat the Tigers or pushed them to overtime. That stretch should provide an immediate answer about the new offense and the rebuilt defense.
Can Cocoa replace the defensive impact it lost while getting more consistent production from the passing game? Brooks and Wilson give the defense two proven pieces, but last season's leaders in sacks, takeaways and fumble production have graduated. The answer will determine whether Cocoa is merely a playoff team or a state championship threat.

T25PS Prediction
I have Cocoa finishing 8-2, with losses to The First Academy, and #47 Raines. I think a lot of people are sleeping on this team this year, and they'll return back to the title game for the fourth time in five years, but will fall short in the championship.
Bottom Line
Cocoa remains one of Florida's most reliable public-school programs, and Hooks understands the standard better than most first-year head coaches could. White, Scott, Brooks and Wilson provide a strong core. The Tigers' state-title chances will depend on how quickly the next defensive group develops and whether the offense avoids the extended scoring droughts that showed up against top competition last season.
