Title: 2026 Public Schools Top 100 Preview: No. 33 Grimsley
Grimsley has a title-level defense and a proven backfield. The quarterback transition will decide its ceiling.

Grimsley enters 2026 with one of the better defensive spines in North Carolina and a running back who has already made a playoff play under pressure. That is enough to put the Whirlies in the championship conversation.
The 2025 record and title are background, not the reason for No. 33. The projection is about the pieces still in Greensboro: Ty Shoemake in the backfield, Evander “E.J.” Davis and Makai Yon in the secondary, and sophomore quarterback Brody Lowe.
Lowe already showed he can operate the offense. Filling in for an injured Faizon Brandon last fall, he went 9–0 as a starter and completed 136 of 183 passes for 2,241 yards, 23 touchdowns and three interceptions. The question for 2026 is not who takes the first snap. It is how far Grimsley can go with Lowe running the show full time.

The 2026 Case
Grimsley is ranked this high because its defense should travel. Davis and Yon give the Whirlies two experienced, playmaking safeties, while Shoemake gives the offense a legitimate answer in the run game.
That combination gives Grimsley a workable formula against anyone on its schedule: run the ball, keep the game manageable, and let the secondary create a possession or two. Lowe’s 2025 work makes this a continuity play, not a blind quarterback projection.
