Hawaii Open Playoff Preview: Two Rematches, Two Different Championships

Kapolei beat Mililani 25–7 to finish the OIA regular season, but a rematch is not guaranteed. Campbell already beat the Hurricanes. Kahuku gets another chance against the Trojans. Friday’s league semifinals bring all four together with more than one championship still ahead.
Campbell also carries a distinction that matters beyond this bracket: defending HHSAA Open Division state champion. Last year, the Sabers upset top-seeded Kahuku 15–12 in the state semifinals, then beat Kamehameha-Kapalama 26–23 in overtime for the title. The Kahuku upset opened the door; it was not the championship game.
How the league and state playoffs fit together
“Open” is the division, not one continuous tournament. The Oahu Interscholastic Association holds its own Open playoffs to crown a league champion. The Hawaii High School Athletic Association then stages a separate, four-team Open state tournament involving both the OIA and the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
The OIA semifinals are Friday, October 30. Top-seeded #86 Kapolei (HI) hosts Campbell at 7:30 p.m. Hawaii time—1:30 a.m. Eastern on Saturday, October 31. Second-seeded #88 Mililani (HI) hosts Kahuku 25 minutes after its JV game; no fixed varsity kickoff is listed.
Kapolei and Mililani finished 4–1 in league play; Campbell and Kahuku were 3–2. Campbell advanced by beating Leilehua 42–7 on October 23, while Kahuku beat Kailua 36–0 the following day. Friday’s winners meet for the OIA championship November 7 at 7 p.m. Hawaii time at Mililani.
