Texas commit Ty Knutson and Texas Tech commit Hunter Haug lead Smithson Valley's pursuit of a third straight state championship.

Smithson Valley did more than repeat last season. The Rangers held a Frisco Lone Star offense that had been averaging more than 50 points in the playoffs to six, won the Class 5A Division I championship 28-6 and became the San Antonio area's first repeat state champion since Judson in 1992 and 1993. Now the question is whether a team with an established quarterback and real holes to fill on defense can make history again.
Texas commit Ty Knutson, Texas Tech commit Hunter Haug and UTSA commit Caleb Peagler give Larry Hill three proven centerpieces. They also make the roster transition easy to misunderstand. Smithson Valley graduated major production from the front seven, including Hudson Woods and four-year defensive tackle Justin Roberts. The three-peat case begins with the returning stars, but it will be decided by how quickly the Rangers rebuild around them.

The Three-Peat Starts With Continuity, Not Certainty
Knutson passed for 2,610 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2025, then guided the offense through a 14-game winning streak after the lone loss to Brennan. With his Texas commitment settled, he can enter his senior year focused on command, timing and getting the ball to a playmaker such as Haug before pressure reaches him. Jake Erwin and a reworked line will determine how often that plan stays on schedule.

The offense has more continuity than the defense. Haug returns after a 60-catch, 1,156-yard, 14-touchdown season, and Peagler scored 20 rushing touchdowns despite missing time. Gunnar Shoquist showed in the playoffs that the backfield does not have to depend on one runner. On defense, Haug and Baylor commit Noah Johnson give the secondary two recruited answers while the front seven develops.
That is the real shape of this title defense. Smithson Valley does not need to become a different program; it needs new defenders to learn the details that let the Rangers suffocate Lone Star in Arlington. Hill enters his 34th season at Smithson Valley with 330 wins at the school. Few coaches are better equipped to make that kind of transition, but experience on the sideline cannot replace game reps in the box.
Players to Know
Ty Knutson, QB
Knutson is committed to Texas after passing for 2,610 yards and 29 touchdowns as a junior. He already knows what the state-title stage requires, and that matters when every opponent will force him to be patient. His senior challenge is to keep the offense efficient while the line and defense work through more turnover than they did a year ago.
Hunter Haug, WR/DB
Haug caught 60 passes for 1,156 yards and 14 touchdowns and added 56 tackles while earning all-district honors in 2025. The Texas Tech commit can change a game as Knutson's most proven target or as a physical defender. That two-way workload makes him central to both the championship ceiling and the weekly depth plan.
Caleb Peagler, RB/LB
Peagler rushed for 976 yards and 20 touchdowns on 175 carries despite missing several games. The UTSA commit runs with the contact balance to finish drives and has the background to help at linebacker when needed. Keeping him healthy gives Smithson Valley a reliable answer when the passing game is forced to work underneath.
Jake Erwin, OL
Erwin is a roughly 6-foot-2, 275-pound Class of 2027 interior lineman who earned all-district recognition while carrying a 4.0 GPA. His recruitment includes four college offers, including McMurry. The résumé matters, but his larger value is practical: Knutson and the running backs need a veteran communicator inside while the Rangers replace other pieces up front.
Gunnar Shoquist, RB/LB, Class of 2028
Shoquist stopped looking like a future piece during the 2025 playoff run. He rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns against Pieper, then followed with 184 rushing yards and another score as a receiver against New Braunfels. As a junior, he gives Hill another physical runner who can keep Peagler fresh and make the backfield harder to script against.
Noah Johnson, S
Johnson enters his senior year committed to Baylor after choosing the Bears over Northwestern. He produced 58 tackles, 12 pass breakups, two interceptions and two tackles for loss in 2025, then added 417 return yards. His range and ball production give a rebuilding defense a second proven secondary leader alongside Haug.
Schedule Breakdown
Cinco Ranch provides an immediate opening-night test, followed by a road game at Sotomayor and a home matchup with McCallum. The date to circle inside district play is Oct. 9 against Anderson. The Trojans averaged 40.5 points last season, making that game a direct examination of how far Smithson Valley's new front seven has come.
The Rangers then face Lockhart before closing with Boerne Champion and Seguin. Knutson, Haug, Peagler and Shoquist give the offense enough ways to survive an imperfect night. The schedule becomes dangerous if the defense cannot get off the field and forces those players to chase points for four quarters.

Biggest Question
Can Smithson Valley remain adaptable when every opponent has spent an offseason studying the two-time champion?
Knutson and Haug give the Rangers leadership on both sides, but the second answers will decide the three-peat. Peagler and Shoquist can keep the offense balanced; Johnson can stabilize the back end. The uncertainty is in front of them, where graduates took years of experience and production out of the lineup. Smithson Valley has to become dependable there before the bracket narrows.
Bottom Line
Smithson Valley has the quarterback, two-way star power and championship structure to win a third straight title. I see the Rangers as one of Texas' best teams again. I also see a defense that must prove its front seven can be rebuilt quickly enough to let that experience matter in December.

10-0 regular season, however I do think their title streak comes to an end this year and they do not three-peat. With Desoto moving down, and Richmond Randle also in the class, it will be tough to make it back to Jerry's World.
