McPherson’s Seven Touchdowns Lead a Friday of Statements, Upsets and Last-Second Drama

#7 Brownsburg 38, #61 Westfield 14

At halftime, Brownsburg (IN) and Westfield (IN) were tied at 14. The final makes the game look less competitive than its first two quarters; the 24 unanswered second-half points explain why it changed so sharply. Brownsburg converted a fourth down on its opening second-half possession and Oscar Frye found Noah Dearman for the go-ahead touchdown. A Westfield fumble gave the Bulldogs another short field. Sophomore Parker Condon’s running helped stretch the lead before Frye connected with Branden Sharpe for the final touchdown.

That is a more useful takeaway than the margin alone. Brownsburg handled a ranked opponent that had matched it drive for drive early, then capitalized when Westfield’s possessions began breaking down.

Skyridge 37, #31 Corner Canyon 27

Skyridge (UT) put #31 Corner Canyon (UT) in a 27–0 hole with defense and field position. Jackson Horsley and Ethan Schriever returned interceptions for touchdowns on the Chargers’ first two drives. Skyridge recovered an onside kick after the second return and turned that possession into another touchdown. The Falcons finished with five interceptions, including two by Sa Tanuvasa.

Corner Canyon scored before halftime and again to open the third quarter, but the comeback never brought it within one score in the second half. This was a ten-point loss shaped by a disastrous start, not simply a late exchange of touchdowns. Skyridge’s first win over Corner Canyon since their 2022 state-title meeting also gives Friday’s result local weight beyond the national ranking.

Nelson 36, #56 West Linn 35

Nelson (OR) trailed West Linn (OR) five separate times and answered each time. Kevin Cohen’s two-yard touchdown run made it 35–34 with seconds remaining. Rather than settle for a kick and overtime, Nelson went for two. Quarterback Braylon Gaines found his intended receiver covered, rolled right and reached the pylon for the winning conversion with seven seconds left.

Gaines passed for 230 yards and three touchdowns; Cohen added 124 rushing yards and two scores on 32 carries. West Linn had the yardage edge, 414–365, and quarterback Sloan Baker accounted for five touchdowns. Nelson won the decisive play anyway. It is the sort of road result that will demand attention when the next Top 100 is discussed, without requiring a predicted rank today.

#54 Millard South 49, Omaha North 47

Millard South (NE) survived Omaha North (NE) in a game that offered almost no defensive breathing room. Patriots quarterback Trae Taylor threw for 295 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 133 yards and three more. Omaha North quarterback Dominic Yancy threw four touchdowns and added one on the ground. Millard South’s two-point win preserved its unbeaten start; Omaha North’s production made clear how narrow that escape was.

The Patriots have won with far larger margins this season. Friday instead tested whether their offense could keep answering an opponent with the same capacity to score. The answer was yes, just barely. That distinction matters more than treating 49–47 as another routine win beside Millard South’s name.

#11 Venice 57, Sarasota 33

Venice (FL) had enough offense to beat Sarasota (FL) comfortably, but the Sailors made the Indians work in a game that was not as tidy as the 57 points suggest. Dorien Jones ran for 208 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries despite sitting out much of the second half. Freshman Mike Blakely caught nine passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns; Ira Dale Jr. added two rushing scores.

Sarasota still scored 33, its highest total against Venice since 2007. Venice also sacked quarterback Hudson West five times. The result strengthens Venice’s case as a team that can win a high-scoring contest, while giving it defensive work to examine before the next major test.

#10 North Shore 35, Atascocita 0

North Shore (TX) supplied a different kind of statement. Atascocita (TX) arrived on a three-game winning streak and left without a point. The 35–0 Final, was North Shore’s third shutout in five games. Its other two came against Lancaster and Crosby.

There is no need to assign individual credit without a supported game report. The team result is substantial enough: North Shore shut out a familiar Texas opponent while many Friday contenders were trading touchdowns. It belongs in the next rankings conversation on what the Mustangs have done, rather than on reputation alone.

#18 Miami Central (FL) beat Northwestern (FL) 52–10 in a rivalry result that stands out even on a night of wide margins. Neville (LA) handed #29 Alexandria (LA) a 38–27 loss, and Ridge View (SC) held previously unbeaten #53 Rock Hill (SC) to ten points in a 20–10 win.
